After a year of successful fundraising, the construction of new sports courts at Boulder Beach is expected to get underway this September.

In September 2016, the Friends of Lake Panorama board voted to raise funds for new sports courts, if the Lake Panorama Association board would commit matching funds in advance. At its October 2016 meeting, the LPA board voted to commit $50,000, contingent upon Friends raising $50,000.

Lake Panorama Couple Takes in Sights of Havana

Janet and Darwin Luing spent two days exploring Havana, Cuba, using the cruise ship behind them as their home base.

For decades, travelling from the United States to Cuba has been a complicated endeavor. In December 2014, President Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro announced the two countries would normalize relations after more than 50 years. This led to U.S. citizens being allowed to visit Cuba without special permits, although most still must go on a supervised group tour.

Darwin and Janet Luing have lived full-time at Lake Panorama since 2006. While a trip to Cuba may have been on the bucket list of many travelers, that wasn’t the case with the Luings.

Cathy VanGundy and her husband, Kerry, learned to play pickleball while spending time in Arizona during the winter. This spring, Cathy decided it would be fun to connect with other pickleball players closer to their Lake Panorama home.

She applied for and received a grant from the USA Pickleball Association, which helped her purchase two nets, some paddles and balls. She worked with the City of Panora to gain access to the Panora Community Center gym, and offered free classes to anyone who wanted to learn to play.

Community Involvement Way of Life for Deal Family

Bill Deal was involved in agriculture his whole life. Here he’s shown at an early age with his 4-H calf.

By Susan Thompson

Bill Deal was born September 6, 1936 in Des Moines and raised on a farm near Bagley. He passed away at his home in Florida on November 24, 2016. During his 80 years of life, Deal had an impact on Guthrie County and beyond — an impact that continues even after his death.

Deal graduated from Bagley High School in 1954, before spending four years at Iowa State University. He taught ag education in Correctionville for one year before marrying Patricia Heiland. He then joined the Navy as an officer, and served for three years out of Norfolk, Virginia.
